Kuya Arz Commentaries As the old saying goes, spare the rod and spoil the child. Mary Jane’s life is as valuable as any other citizen’s life. However, the circumstances that led to her salvation challenge justice systems around the world in imposing its mandate. More importantly, it puts the Philippine Government in a position where it has to negotiate with the same terms as Mary Jane’s. This encourages others to follow in her footsteps, knowing that the Philippines will save them. Mary Jane’s rescue is delightful news. Nonetheless, the implications send a clear message for anyone considering to take the risk. Many would now believe that no one is executed for being a drug mule. It bolsters their confidence to partake in this illegal activity, because of the knowledge that the government is there to rescue them. What is saddening still is the fact that because the government had chosen to offer a deal to surrender drug dealers in exchange for a convict’s life, the same action is expected in future negotiations. Mary Jane’s case stands as a standard for future talks. However, it will not always be successful. Not all countries would consider the deal. At one point, one country would rather impose its punishment to prevent the justice system from being undermined. Should that time come, the Philippine government will receive more criticism for failing to rescue one of its citizens, even if it had made every effort to prevent it, and despite clear signs of guilt towards the convict. Mary Jane’s rescue is both commendable and disheartening. Because she was spared, one life is saved. However, it is her rescue that opens the door to the idea that the government will save others that face the same situation. In this case, it can truly be said that if you spare the rod, you spoil the child.
